The Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation’s (CHLPI’s) federal policy work focuses on systems-level change to improve access to care for people and families with low incomes, emphasizing the care and treatment needs of people living with HIV, hepatitis C (HCV), and other chronic health conditions.
Our Approach
CHLPI monitors, analyzes, and provides comments on federal legislation, regulations, and policies related to health care access and treatment. We also play a key role in educating and informing other advocates, consumers, service providers, and policymakers about the opportunities and challenges involved in health care reform policy making.
A key focus of our work in this area is building community-based advocacy capacity and broad-based advocacy coalitions. CHLPI staff collaborate with people living with HIV, HCV, and other chronic conditions and their health and social service providers and advocates to leverage legislative and policy-making processes to improve access to health care treatment and services. We support community education and amplify lessons learned and best practices within and across states to further community engagement.
Coalition Building
CHLPI staff co-chair the HIV Health Care Access Working Group (HHCAWG) and the Chronic Illness and Disability Partnership (CIDP). Through the mobilization of these advocacy coalitions, CHLPI creates and disseminates comments on proposed regulations and policies, and letters to Congress on specific legislative priorities. CHLPI also facilitates direct meetings with elected and appointed government officials, and promotes efforts to educate and inform key agencies and decision makers within the federal government on legal, policy, and regulatory issues.
